Grandson charged in connection with killing of Galway pensioner

The grandson of Co Gaway pensioner Finbar Fahy has been charged with his murder.

Gearoid Fahy (aged 22), of Carrownamona, Ardrahan, Co Galway appeared before a special sitting of Ennis District Court this evening.

Detective Inspector Gerard Roche told the court he charged Gearoid Fahy with the murder of 78-year-old Finbar Fahy at Gort Garda Station this evening.

The body of the retired widower was discovered at his home at Ballinduff, Ardrahan on Wednesday morning. A post mortem revealed he died of head injuries.

Gort Superintendent Sean Healy requested the accused be remanded in custody and Gearoid Fahy’s solicitor made no application for bail, but asked that her client receive medical attention as he is on continuing medication.

Judge Joseph Mangan granted an application for free legal aid on hearing the accused is unemployed, and remanded Gearoid Fahy in custody to appear before Shannon District Court next Thursday.
