Fine Gael TDs and Senators endorse Kenny’s Seanad plan

Fine Gael TDs and Senators have endorsed Enda Kenny's surprise proposal to abolish the Seanad if the party is elected to Government.

The decision was made at a lengthy meeting of the parliamentary party last night.

Mr Kenny surprised many of his colleagues during the weekend when he announced that he would arrange a referendum to scrap the Seanad within one year of being elected to Government.

He also said he would reduce the number of TDs by 20.

Many Fine Gael Senators and a small number of TDs reportedly criticised the policy at last night's meeting.

However, the party as a whole endorsed the plan.
