Man in serious condition after Limerick assault

A man in his 40s is in a critical condition in hospital following an assault in Limerick city in the early hours of this morning.

The victim is understood to have suffered serious head injuries during a row involving several people on Mungret Street at around midnight.

Gardaí say a blunt instrument was used in the assault.

The man has been taken to Limerick Regional Hospital, where he is being treated in the High Dependency Unit.

The scene of the assault has been sealed off for a technical examination.
