Army makes live grenade safe in Tipperary

Army bomb disposal experts have made safe a live World War II-era grenade discovered in a Tipperary housing estate.

The grenade was found by a member of the public at the Rosemount Estate area of Cahir and was made safe this afternoon.

A number of houses had to be evacuated after the grenade was found this morning.

"Following inspection the grenade was found to be live and was removed by the bomb disposal team to be disposed of safely with a controlled explosion on nearby wasteground," an Army spokesman said today.

Captain Pat O'Connor from the Defence Forces said it could have posed a real threat to the public.

It was the 151st time the bomb disposal teams had been called out this year.
