High level of public understanding of Lisbon, says report

Most people are likely to vote in the Lisbon treaty referendum this time around, according to a new study.

Research from the Referendum Commission shows that 90% of the public say they will probably vote.

The research also found that there is high public understanding of the Treaty this time also.

Almost three-quarters (72%) said they are extremely likely to vote with a further 18% saying they're quite likely to cast a ballot.

However, there are still a number of issues that voters are unclear about.

Chairperson of the Referendum Commission Justice Frank Clarke outlined one of them,

"One of the questions that needs more explanation is the question of the minimum wage," he said.

"We've tried to make clear before now and we'll do so again, the Lisbon Treaty has nothing to do with the minimum wage.

“The question as to whether Ireland has a minimum wage and the rate at which it's set is something to be decided in Ireland by Ireland and is not something over which the EU has any power.”
