Minister: All aspects of crash will be examined

The Minister for Transport has promised a detailed investigation into what he has described as an “horrific” crash between a bus and a Luas tram on Dublin's O'Connell Street yesterday.

One man remained in a critical condition in hospital this afternoon as a result of the collision, while two others were in a serious condition.

Gardaí have launched an appeal for information, and particularly want to speak to passengers who may have left the scene before emergency services arrived.

As well as the Gardaí, Dublin Bus, the Railway Procurement Agency, Luas operators Veolia Transport and the Railway Safety Commission are all investigating the crash.

Minister Noel Dempsey said it was important to examine all aspects of what happened.

“If there is any question about lights, priorities or anything else that needs to be looked at - yes, everything will be looked at.

“We need to find out the causes first of all, and then try and ensure that it doesn't happen again.”

CIE Chairman Dr. John Lynch said CCTV footage clearly showed the bus driver had a green light.

“All I can say is having looked at it yesterday and having the CCTV it's fairly clear that there was a green light. Now what can a driver do if he has a green light except go through it?”

Veolia Transport said they would not be making any reply to Dr. Lynch’s comment.
