Man arrested in connection with armed raid on cash-in-transit van

Gardaí are questioning a man in his 40s in connection with a raid on a cash-in-transit van in Co Westmeath this afternoon.

A gunman targeted the van as it was delivering money to a post office in Irishtown in Athlone this lunchtime.

He escaped with €50,000 in cash. Gardaí chased the getaway vehicle and stopped it around two miles from Kinnegad.

A man was arrested and is being held at Athlone garda station.
