FG: Extra taxes won't solve 'dire' economic situation

There has been a mixed political reaction to the Commission on Taxation's report.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen has said it set out a framework for reforming the tax system over the next decade.

Meanwhile Finance Minister Brian Lenihan said the report will contribute to meeting our immediate fiscal challenges.

The Opposition expressed concern at some of the Commission's recommendations.

Labour’s Joan Burton claimed not enough consideration was given to tax exiles while Sinn Féin described the report as deeply flawed.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said that introducing extra taxes at a time when people were already financially stretched would not help solve Ireland’s 'dire' economic difficulties.
