Widespread support for equality law complaint

More than 80 organisations have supported a complaint to the European Commission, claiming that Ireland is in breach of EU equality law.

MEPs, Trade Unions and NGOs have signed the legal complaint by the Equality and Rights Alliance in relation to the number of cases dismissed at the Equality Tribunal.

The ERA said far more cases fail than succeed at the tribunal, and it has expressed concern about a drop in the number of claims on multiple grounds of discrimination.

If the ERA's complaint is upheld, the matter will be referred to the European Court of Justice.
