Fifty-seven jobs are expected to be lost at Trócaire, it was confirmed this afternoon.

The overseas development agency said 27 jobs would go in Ireland by the end of 2010, with 30 further positions being lost overseas.

Trócaire Director Justin Kilcullen said the agency had been forced to make a decision to withdraw from a total of nine countries by the end of next year.

"The aid budget has been cut by 22% over the past year and that leaves us with a shortfall of €7m this year, €10m next year and €13m the following year," Mr Kilcullen said.

"On top of that, subscriptions from the general public are down about 10%."
