Search and rescue operation underway in Limerick city

A major search operation is underway in Limerick city for a teenage girl who fell into the River Shannon this afternoon.

A major search operation is underway in Limerick city today for a teenage girl who fell into the River Shannon this afternoon.

The 17-year-old was seen entering the water at Sarsfield Bridge at around 2.30pm.

A search and rescue operation was immediately launched and the Gardaí and Valentia Coastguard were notified.

The Shannon helicopter was scrambled and the Garda helicopter was also deployed.

Garda divers together with local marine rescue teams and the emergency services are also involved.

The search is focusing on the area between Thomond Bridge and Sarsfield Bridge in Limerick city.

There have been no sightings of the teenager so far.

Gardaí have identified the girl but have said they will not be releasing her name yet.
