The Minister for Education is seeking meetings with business group IBEC and their high-tech division ICT to discuss concerns over the low-level of take-up of maths and science at Leaving Cert.
Just 16% of students took higher level maths this year - the take up for higher level science was even lower with 10% sitting chemistry and 8% taking physics.
Business groups have described the situation as a barrier to Ireland becoming a knowledge economy.
Minister O'Keefe said he does not favour a re-introduction of bonus points for those taking maths at higher level and instead wants to overhaul the curriculum.
The Minister said the meetings will also aim to find ways to encourage more students to sit the exams.
