Irishman found dead in Africa
The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that a 26-year-old Irishman has been found dead on the African island of Zanzibar.
Robert Stringer, who was from Co Wicklow, had been working with Irish charity Camara in Tanzania for the past few weeks.
The Department is providing consular assistance to his family and police in Zanzibar have launched an investigation.
The authorities in Tanzania say that Mr Stringer's body was found in bushes near a beach on the island of Zanzibar at around 8am yesterday.
He had suffered head injuries and his wallet and shoes were missing.
It is believed he may have been mugged.
The Irish embassy in Dar es Salaam is working with Zanzibar police to establish what happened while the Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to Mr Stringer's family.
The Wicklow native had just finished a work placement with Camara, which provides second hand computers to African schools. It is believed he was on holidays on the island.
Local police have launched an investigation and a post mortem is due to take place this weekend.
