Dáil to vote on Michael Shine inquiry motion

The Dáil is due to vote today on an Opposition motion calling for an inquiry into the sexual abuse allegations made against former hospital consultant Michael Shine.

The 77-year-old, who worked at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, was acquitted of indecent assaulting six former male patients in 2003.

However, he was struck off the medical register last year following an investigation into his behaviour by the Medical Council.

Several former patients have made allegations of sexual assault against Dr Shine during a 30-year period up until the 1990s.

Fine Gael and the Labour Party have tabled a Dáil motion backing calls by victim support groups for an official inquiry into the situation.
