FG and Labour join forces to seek Shine inquiry

Fine Gael and the Labour Party have joined forces to demand an inquiry into the sexual abuse allegations against former hospital consultant Michael Shine.

Dr Shine was found not guilty during a court case in October 2003 after a number of men accused him of abusing them while they were teenage patients at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

However, he was struck off the medical register for professional misconduct last year following an investigation by the Medical Council.

Fine Gael and Labour plan to table a Dáil motion this evening backing calls by victim support groups for an official inquiry into the matter.

The motion will also call on the Government to establish procedures to prevent similar abuse occurring in the future.
