FG, Labour motion calls for Shine probe

Fine Gael and Labour today published a joint motion calling for an investigation into how complaints relating to sexual abuse by Dr Michael Shine at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda were handled by the Government.

The motion, which is to be debated in the Dáil next week, also calls for the provision of appropriate support services to Michael Shine’s sexual assault victims, according to a statement issued by the parties.

“There should be an investigation into all aspects of this case and how complaints were handled," said Fine Gael health spokesperson James Reilly.

"It is now incumbent on the Dáil to ensure that the level of harm that was done to his patients, including children, is exposed in full, that justice is done and that his victims receive all the support it is possible to offer.”

In 2003, Dr Shine, who is now in his late 70s, was acquitted of 11 counts of indecent assault on six teenage boys between 1974 and 1982.

He has since been struck off the medical register for professional misconduct.

Victims groups have said a previous review of the handling of the case was totally inadequate.
