Sharp decline in applications for taxi licences

The Taxi Regulator Kathleen Doyle says there has been a sharp decline in the number of applications for taxi licences.

Ms Doyle says there were 350 applications this time last year, but that is down to 100 this year.

She is appearing before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Economic Regulatory Affairs where a number of concerns have been raised about the difficulties facing taxi drivers.

A full review of the system is underway and an action plan will be published in September.

Drivers say they can't make a living because too many licences are being issued.

But Ms Doyle says a moratorium is not the answer.
