Cowen seeks clear response from religious orders

The Taoiseach says he has asked the religious congregations involved in institutional child abuse to give a clear and unequivocal response to demands for more compensation for victims.

Brian Cowen held talks today with representatives the various orders to discuss the fallout from the recent report of the Child Abuse Commission.

The Dáil voted last week to demand that the orders provide a further substantial contribution to the victims of abuse.

In a statement after today's talks, Mr Cowen said he had asked the congregations to provide a specific and comprehensive response to this demand as soon as possible.

He said the response should be clear and unequivocal, adding that it will have profound implications for the well-being of survivors.
