Islanders to cast their votes

Most of the country’s offshore islands will today vote in the local and European elections.

Polling booths will open from 7am-10pm on inhabited islands off the west coast.

The seven islands off Co Cork will vote with the rest of the country tomorrow.

The largest number of votes is expected to be on Inis Mor, which has a population of 824 people.

Each polling station will have two separate ballot boxes for the local and European elections.

Voters will tomorrow be electing 12 MEPs to the European Parliament and 1,627 councillors to 114 local authorities.

Residents of Dublin Central and Dublin South will also be choosing Dáil TDs to replace the late Tony Gregory and Seamus Brennan who both died in the past year.
