Gardaí have named the 20-year-old man who died after being stabbed during an incident in Galway city in the early hours of this morning.

Gardaí have named the 20-year-old man who died after being stabbed during an incident in Galway city in the early hours of this morning.

Gardaí on foot patrol were alerted to the stabbing in the Williamgate Street area, near Eyre Square, just after 2am.

The victim has been named locally as Kieran Cunningham, a deli worker from Slievefinn in Claregalway.

He was rushed to University Hospital Galway in a patrol car, but he was pronounced dead at around 3am.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
