Oblates promise positive response to Cowen appeal

The Oblate Order, which ran the infamous Daingean Reformatory, says it will respond positively to the Taoiseach's comments last night.

Speaking after a cabinet meeting to discuss the Child Abuse Commission report, Brian Cowen called on religious orders to make "a further substantial voluntary contribution" towards victims.

He said the abuse in religious-run state institutions was much more systematic than was known when the Government reached its controversial €128m indemnity deal with religious organisations.

The Oblate Order says it has yet to finalise a position on the issue and is reviewing the recommendations of the commission's report.
