Cowen: Church compo deal may be re-examined

The Taoiseach is indicating that the Government may re-open negotiations with the Catholic Church over the child abuse compensation scheme.

Brian Cowen is repeating assertions he made earlier this week however that there may be legal obstacles to the move.

The Taoiseach's latest comments on the matter follow remarks this morning from the personal assistant to Cardinal Seán Brady, Father Timothy Bartlett, who said the clerical members who ran institutions responsible for abuse should pay more.

Brian Cowen said for this to happen there would first have to be a clear indication from the church is willing to do so.

Earlier today, the Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore said the time has come to re-open negotiations with the Catholic Church.
