Two police officers were injured when they came under petrol bomb and missile attack during disturbances in Derry, police said today.

Two police officers were injured when they came under petrol bomb and missile attack during disturbances in Derry, police said today.

They were attacked when they moved in to stop clashes between nationalist and loyalist youths at the interface in the Fountain Street area.

Both sides targeted the officers, two of whom were injured and needed hospital treatment. The extent of their injuries was not known.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said at least a dozen petrol bombs were thrown at officers as well as bricks and stones before calm was restored.
