Basement blaze leads to evacuation of EU HQ
A blaze which triggered the evacuation of European Commission headquarters in Brussels was blamed on a fire in a basement print room today.
Acrid smoke spread throughout the lower floors, and Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and his staff, whose offices are on the top floors of the 13-floor building, joined other officials who left their desks as police sealed off the area.
