Witness security spending up two-fold last year

Spending on the Gardai's Witness Security Programme has reportedly increased more than two-fold over the past year.

Reports this morning say more than €1.1m was spent on the programme last year, up from €460,000 in 2007.

The initiative was set up after the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin and is designed to protect witnesses from potential intimidation by criminals.
