Nurses in the emergency department at the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick have voted by an overwhelming majority to go on strike.

Some 80% have voted in favour of industrial action over a lack of resources, but the Irish Nurses Organisation says it still hopes the HSE will agree to sit down and discuss the matter.

Meanwhile, nurses at the Mercy University Hospital in Cork have begun a strike ballot in protest at cuts in premium payments for staff.

The result of the vote is expected on Friday.
