Nurses raised fears about the safety of the emergency department at University Hospital Limerick yesterday as the number of patients on trolleys reached 45.

There are fears that the country's second busiest hospital emergency department will be forced to close at night from July 11 onwards due to a shortage of non-consultant hospital doctors.

Nurses in the emergency department at the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick have voted by an overwhelming majority to go on strike.
