Flextronics to cut staff by 130

Electronic components company Flextronics is cutting its Cork workforce by 130 staff, it was announced today.

The voluntary redundancies are due to commence at the end of this month.

In total, 95 general operatives and 35 administrative staff are to go at the Dublin Hill plant.

It is understood that leaves up to 150 staff and contract employees working at the plant.

The employees voted at a meeting four weeks ago to take voluntary redundancy after the company announced worldwide restructuring plans.

Located at Kilbarry Industrial Estate, it once employed more than 1,100 people.

Local councillor Annette Spillane said the redundancies were a further blow to the area.

“The problem is that it is very hard to see any replacement jobs. The Minister for Enterprise and Employment needs to open talks with the company to try and prevent them pulling out altogether.”

Last week, it was announced that the 150 remaining jobs at the Flextronics plant in Limerick will go by the end of this year as the company winds down its operation.

The company, which has its headquarters in Singapore, is one of the world's biggest logistics providers for the IT industry and was a major supplier of Dell in Limerick, which announced it was laying off 1,900 workers last January.
