Public urged to switch off lights for Earth Hour

Householders around the country are being urged to take part in Earth Hour.

Around a billion people in more than 1,000 cities in 25 time zones around the world will turn off their lights for an hour at 8.30pm tonight.

It is part of a universal effort to show that it is possible to take action against climate change.

Iconic buildings here like the Customs House, Government Buildings and Leinster House will go dark for the hour, as will thousands of private homes.
