Taoiseach Brian Cowen says he hopes a broad agreement can be reached in new social partnership talks aimed at devising an economic recovery plan.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen says he hopes a broad agreement can be reached in new social partnership talks aimed at devising an economic recovery plan.

Yesterday, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions cancelled a day of protest planned for next Monday after being invited to renewed talks with employers and government representatives.

The National Economic and Social Council is meeting this afternoon to establish a framework for the talks.

ICTU is insisting that its 10-point plan to ensure fairness in any economic recovery measures must form a major part of any deal.

Employers, meanwhile, say whatever agreement emerges must include a lengthy pay freeze for workers.

Speaking in Dublin this morning, Mr Cowen said he welcomed the decision of all sides to enter the talks and hoped a deal could be finalised.
