Gardai have said they are treating as an accident a shooting which left a 29-year-old man in a critical condition in hospital in Limerick.

Gardai have said they are treating as an accident a shooting which left a 29-year-old man in a critical condition in hospital in Limerick.

Shortly after 2am a shot was discharged at the man's home in St Munchin's Street, St Mary's Park.

He suffered a wound to his head.

He was rushed by ambulance to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle, where he remains in a critical condition.

The scene of the shooting has been preserved for a technical examination and searches are being conducted in the area.
