Concern expressed about huge rise in mumps cases

Meningitis Ireland has expressed concern about the large number of mumps cases detected since the beginning of the year.

Figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre show that 834 cases of mumps have been reported so far this year, compared to 55 during the same period in 2008.

Nearly 60% of cases were among 15 to 24-year-olds.

Mumps is a contagious viral illness that causes fever, headache and painful swollen glands.

It can sometimes cause meningitis and deafness.

Meningitis Ireland says all teenagers and young adults should ensure they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine in order to prevent contracting the disease.
