Taxi unions to discuss next move in licences campaign
Taxi drivers are meeting today to discuss the next move in their campaign for a freeze on the issuing of new licences.
Representatives from the National Taxi Drivers Union and the Irish Taxi Drivers Federation expressed disappointment following talks on the matter yesterday with Transport Minister Noel Dempsey.
They say a nationwide strike is now very likely.
Earlier this week, an economic report prepared for the Taxi Regulator said there was no need for a moratorium on the issuing of taxi licences as the market is reaching natural equilibrium.
Taxi drivers, however, say there are too many taxis on the roads and they can no longer make a decent living without working dangerously long hours.
