Traffic chaos in Dublin as taxi drivers protest

Motorists were being advised to expect continuing delays around Dublin this afternoon due to protesting taxi drivers.

The taxis began converging on Merrion Square from three directions shortly after 2pm, causing disruption across the city centre.

As a result, traffic was reported to be very slow inbound from the North Frederick Street Junction on Dorset Street and through O’Connell Street southbound, and gridlocked on D'Olier Street, Nassau Street and onto College Green.

Further delays were being predicted for later this afternoon as the protesters disperse.

The drivers are calling for a cap on the number of licences being issued by the industry’s regulator, amid claims that there are too many taxis operating on the streets of Dublin.
