Romanian authorities seeking extradition of Romanian man
The Romanian authorities are seeking the extradition of one of their nationals wanted to serve a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence for allegedly stealing a number of chickens and a bicycle more than 15 years ago.
The Romanians are seeking the return of Valentin Stan (aged 30), who is currently detained at Cloverhill, with an address at St Theresa's Gardens, Dublin to serve a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence for the theft of four chickens and a bicycle at Bujor, Tecuci in Romania.
In the European Arrest Warrant seeking Mr Stan's surrender, which was previously endorsed by the High Court, it is claimed that the offence took place in March 1993, when Stan was 13 years of age, and that at least two of the chickens allegedly taken were consumed.
The Romanians further claim that Stan, who has been in Ireland since around 2000, was convicted of the offences in 1999 and was subsequently sentenced to a total of three years and six in prison.
Today Mr Justice Michael Peart, who remanded Stan in custody, adjourned the case to later this month.
