A senior fire officer was arrested today for questioning over the handling of a fire which claimed the lives of two of his men.

Gardaí confirmed a man in his 50s was detained in Co Wicklow this morning over the blaze in a disused warehouse in September 2007.

He is being questioned on suspicion of endangering life.

Two firefighters died in the blaze. Mark O’Shaughnessy, aged 26, and Brian Murray, aged 46, were killed when the roof of a disused building on Lower Dargle Road in Bray, Co Wicklow, collapsed on them.

The man is the third person to be questioned over the deaths.

A woman, also believed to be a member of the fire service, was arrested in October while a man in his 40s was detained in September.

Both were released without charge.

The gardaí, Wicklow County Council and the Health and Safety Authority launched separate investigations following the blaze.

The families of the two dead firefighters have said they believe there was a delay in responding to the fire and they claim it was a major factor in the roof collapsing.
