A car bomb has been discovered abandoned close to a primary school in the North.

Bomb disposal experts had been monitoring the vehicle in the Co Down village of Castlewellan since Tuesday.

A telephone call warned police that the device was originally intended for the nearby British army base.

According to the PSNI, a number of controlled explosions were carried out earlier in the week, after several suspect items were found in the vehicle.
