Highest proportion of early school leavers in Tánaiste's constituency
It has been revealed that more than a quarter of boys in Tánaiste Mary Coughlan’s constituency, Donegal South West, leave school before turning 15 - the highest level in the state.
By comparison, almost 60% of men in Dublin South East – Environment Minister John Gormley’s area – stayed in education until after 21, more than double the national average.
Information such as this has been revealed following an in-depth examination of results from Census 2006, providing detailed information on Dáil constituencies including population make-up, transport and school services.
The study provides TDs and Senators with a range of facts and figures on their electoral areas, such as nationality and religious breakdowns and the number of people in work.
It has also been found that Dublin North-West has the highest number of singe-parent families, Dublin Central has the lowest number of Irish nationals, and Meath East and Kildare South have the youngest populations.
John O’Donoghue, Ceann Comhairle, said the 43 profiles would provide an insight into the distinctive character of each electoral area.
“We’re all very familiar with our own constituencies and the people we serve,” Mr O’Donoghue said.
“However there are many occasions when access to a clear and detailed picture of each constituency would be helpful to deal with local issues and concerns.”
The profiles were compiled by the Oireachtas Library and Research Service and outline the key differences between each constituency.
Mr O’Donoghue said the breakdown of employment and transport services in each constituency was vital to allow TDs a clearer picture of the problems facing voters.
“These are key issues for every constituency and are clearly linked to education and training,” Mr O’Donoghue said.
“Similarly, transport needs can be identified and housing needs can be identified based on clear statistical information compiled in these constituency profiles.”
Mr O’Donoghue was presented with a copy of every constituency profile by staff from the Oireachtas Library and Research service, topped by his own area Kerry South.
The profiles are available on the Oireachtas website.
