‘Abuse case facts must be established’ - Harney

The Health Minister says the facts about the Roscommon abuse case must be established before action is taken.

Mary Harney was responding to revelations at Roscommon Circuit Court about a mother's abuse of her six children over a six-year period.

The 40-year-old was jailed for seven years yesterday for subjecting her children to incest, sexual abuse and neglect.

Children's Minister Barry Andrews is awaiting the outcome of an HSE investigation before deciding on any action.

The case has prompted calls from children's support groups for an independent commission of inquiry.

Harney said she wished to make an informed decision about what to do next.
