The Dáil and Seanad have agreed to bring scandal-hit Anglo Irish Bank into state control and sent emergency legislation to President Mary McAleese to be signed into law.

Finance Minister Brian Lenihan insisted the nationalisation of the financial institution was vital to tackle a major threat to the Irish banking sector.
