Murphy denies IRA involvement in Evans disappearance

Sinn Féin minister Conor Murphy has again denied that the IRA was involved in the disappearance of Gerry Evans 30-years ago.

Mr Murphy was speaking after a Sunday newspaper carried an interview with an anonymous man who claimed he was a member of an IRA gang that kidnapped and shot the 24-year-old in 1979.

The man claimed Mr Evans' body was buried near Hackballscross in Co Louth.

The IRA has admitted to shooting and secretly burying nine people during the Troubles.

Mr Evans was not one of those people, but the reporter who wrote Sunday's newspaper article says the credentials of the anonymous IRA man who gave her the information were confirmed by a long-standing and trusted republican source.

Mr Murphy, however, says he still believes the IRA was not involved in the disappearance.
