Gardaí release four arrested in murders probe

Four of the five people arrested by detectives probing a double gangland murder were tonight released without charge.

Notorious heroin dealer Michael ’Roly’ Cronin and his associate James Maloney were shot in the head as they sat in a car in Summerhill, Dublin, last week.

Three women in their thirties and two men, one in his mid-thirties and the other in his mid-forties, were arrested in the north inner city yesterday under Section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act.

A garda spokesman said one male remains in custody in Store Street garda station.

“A file will be prepared for The Director of Public Prosecutions with regards to those released,” he added.

The shooting happened on January 7 at around 8.30pm. Gardaí, who were initially called to reports of a car accident after the car ploughed into a central crash barrier, found the two men shot in the head.

Cronin, 35, died within an hour while Maloney was left fighting for his life.

The 26-year-old dad from Ballymun died in St James’ Hospital two days later.

The murders were the first gangland deaths this year.
