Gardaí in Tipperary seize drugs worth €117,000

Gardaí in Tipperary have seized drugs worth more than €117,000.

The discovery was made as part of an ongoing operation targeting drug dealing in the region.

Officers from the Tipperary Divisional Drug Unit as well as the Portlaoise Traffic Corps and local Garda units were all involved in the operation.

Gardaí stopped a van outside Portlaoise shortly after 2pm yesterday afternoon.

A search of the vehicle uncovered five kilograms of cannabis as well as a further five kilograms of cannabis grass, worth around €95,000.

The 34-year-old driver was arrested and taken to Thurles Garda station for questioning.

Two follow up searches in houses in the Borrisoleigh area of Tipperary found more cannabis resin an herb, with an estimated value of more than €18,000.

Heroin worth €4,000 was also seized. A 32-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is being detained at Templemore Garda station.

Both men can be held for up to seven days.
