An 18-year-old remains in Garda custody in relation to the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old in Limerick yesterday.

The non-Irish national was one of two teenagers injured in an altercation at a premises on Sarsfield Street yesterday afternoon.

A post mortem will be carried out on the teenager's body later today.

Gardai say an incident involving two teenagers took place at an asylum seekers' hostel in Limerick city centre shortly after two o'clock yesterday afternoon.

A 17 year old was taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle to be treated for stab wounds.

He died a short time later, and gardaí subsequently launched a murder inquiry.

A second teenager was treated for non life-threatening injuries.
