The Government is to pump €5.5bn of taxpayers' money into Ireland's three main banks in the hope of securing their stability and boosting the supply of credit to the rest of the economy.

The Government is to pump €5.5bn of taxpayers' money into Ireland's three main banks in the hope of securing their stability and boosting the supply of credit to the rest of the economy.

Under the plan, the State will invest €1.5bn in Anglo Irish Bank and take 75% control of the company.
