Gardaí praised after woman rescued from River Lee

Two gardaí are being praised for their bravery after they rescued a woman from the River Lee in Cork last night.

They responded to an emergency call after the woman's car was seen entering the river near the Shandon Boat club at about 7pm last night.

The gardaí jumped into the river which was at full tide at the time and swam out to the car which was being carried downstream some 10 metres from the shore.

They managed to break open the driver's window and pulled the woman - who was in her 30s - free from the car and got her back to the shore.

The emergency services had also been alerted and the woman was rushed by ambulance to the Mercy University Hospital where she was treated.
