Campaign to raise road safety among North immigrants

A campaign to promote better driving among the North’s migrant communities is being launched today.

Environment Minister Sammy Wilson is launching a multimedia pack aimed at raising road safety awareness among migrants.

Better Driving Behaviour is aimed at the four largest migrant communities in the province – Polish, Lithuanian, Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese.

The pack contains a DVD of five new advertisements reminding the viewers of the need for attentive driving.

The adverts have been translated into the four languages as has the recently revised Highway Code.

The DOE has also produced two leaflets – one providing guidance on the legal requirements for child seats and the other on drink driving.

The PSNI and the Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities have identified Polish, Lithuanian, Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese as the largest foreign language communities in the province and those that generate the greatest demand for translation service.

A DOE spokesman said they would keep under review the need for translations in other languages.
