Teen charged with possessing €13,000 worth of cannabis

A 17-year-old boy appeared at the Children’s Court today charged with possessing €13,000 worth of cannabis at his home in south county Dublin.

The teenager is charged with possessing the drugs, and possession with intent to supply at his home address, in Carrickmines, on July 4 last. He made no reply to the charge, Judge Bryan Smyth was told.

Judge Smyth remanded the boy, who was accompanied by his mother, on bail to appear again next month when he is to be served with a book of evidence and returned for trial to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Jurisdiction to retain the case in the Children’s Court was refused and the judge held that it should go forward to the higher court which has wider sentencing powers.

He granted legal aid noting that the defendant was taking part in a training course.
