European consumers assured about safety of Irish meat

The European Food Safety Authority is moving to reassure European consumers about the safety of Irish-produced meat.

In a statement this afternoon, the authority said it was unlikely that anyone's health had been affected by the contamination of some Irish pork with toxins

Experts say someone would have to eat the contaminated meat regularly over a sustained period of time before it would have any adverse effect.

Meanwhile, the Association of Craft Butchers of Ireland says Irish bacon, ham and sausages should be back on sale from tomorrow.

It says local authority vets are giving the go-ahead for the sale of pork products from farms which have been deemed safe.
