Ceremony to mark legacy of female Oireachtas members

A special ceremony is being held in the Dáil chamber today to mark the contribution made by female TDs and Senators since the establishment of the Irish State.

Up to 70 current and former female Oireachtas members are due to take part in the event, which coincides with the 90th anniversary of the first general election in which women had the right to vote.

The ceremony will also remember Irish nationalist Constance Markiewicz, the first woman to be elected as an MP at Westminster.

She was also elected to the Dáil in the 1918 vote.
